A Movie A Day Challenge #001: Hot Chili (1985)

Hot Chili (1985)
Director: William Sachs
Stars: Allan Kayser, Joe Rubbo and Chuck Hemingway

80’s Teen Sex Comedies, I can’t get enough of them. The landmark 1982 film Porky’s set the standard on this offshoot of raunchy comedies. The genre ran strong for a decade before political correctness imposed its uncomfortable views regarding sex and teens in a comical way.

During the 80’s many of these films were made, most following very close the formula set with Porky’s. Teens looking to lose their virginity, catch their dream date, or just get laid as much as possible were almost always central to the story.

Some of these films have made it to DVD, but sadly the majority was only released on VHS during the home video boom.  Even fewer have made it to Blu-Ray, and given the fact that these movies look so dated by today’s standards and the home entertainment market’s lean towards streaming only newer content it’s a sad day that all we are left with are crappy VHS rips on DVD-R. But I regress.

This film is no different, with a very flimsy story written entirely for the purpose to show some 80’s babes naked. And there’s nothing wrong with that, now is there?

Four friends take a road trip to Mexico to work at a hotel/resort (where everyone speaks English) in hopes of sleeping with the guest. The friends consist of a whiney nerd, a boisterous fat guy, and two normal looking fellows. So you have your staple of 80’s movies stereotypes, a ridiculous setting, and opportunities galore for the characters to walk in on the hotel guest nude.

They don’t get much more predictable than this, all the characters are horny and it gets them in all sorts of trouble in these silly little scenes filled with slap stick potty humor.

If you know what to expect with a movie from this particular genre and decade then your expectations shouldn’t be all that high as far as plot, story structure, and flow go. All in all it’s a decent example of an 80’s Teen Sex Comedy.

1985’s Hot Chili was a Cannon release, produced by the 80’s film power house cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus. Interestingly enough the same team produced the Hebrew spoken movie “Lemon popsicles” in 1978, which some claim was a model for Porky’s.

Unfortunately this gem has yet to be released on DVD or Blu-Ray anywhere. DVD-R’s can be found on the internet easily enough. The particular version I watched was ripped from Cable station “Impact” and was a lot cleaner copy than the old murky VHS rip that’s been floating around for years.
