Space and sex, sex and space, two tastes that taste great together. There are a few mainstream films that had this winning combination. 1968’s Barbarella immediately comes to mind, and who can forget Princess Leia in her slave ship metal bikini.
But by far it was the independent film producers who really took the mix and stirred it up into something steamy. Below will take a look at a few movies that had this out-of-this-world mix.
Director: William Sachs
Stars: Stephen Macht, Avery Schreiber and J.D. Hinton
It’s the year 3008, a “police” ship manned by a handful of fools and a beautiful android hide behind an asteroid in hopes of catching speeders in space. One does zoom pass the ship and they give chase, a laser battle ensues and the police ship takes damage.
Through this opening sequence we learn a lot about this film. The special effects budget, the caliber of acting, and how silly things are going to get.
One of the officers on board is named Thor. Thor finds himself falling in love with the ships android, the beautiful Playboy Playmate Dorothy Stratten. Sexual tensions builds between the two characters and Thor steals a kiss from the hot android only to be shocked for his troubles.
As fate would have it this happens right before he’s schedule to enter suspended animation for the next twenty some odd years. Thor is surprised when he wakes to find the ships sex-bot reprogramed for love. Love making scene takes place with a few nice soft shots.
Then rather quickly the story heads off into adventure territory when they catch up with the ship they pursued at the beginning of the film. They come to find out it’s piloted by aliens up to no good.
Galaxina is kidnapped and Thor goes after her to save the day.
An obvious spoof of Star Wars as well as Star trek this film falls short at being a straight out comedy as well as a softcore skin flick. More of the leading lady could have been showed and fewer jokes could have been told to pad out the film.

Space Thing (1968)
Director: Byron Mabe
Stars: Karla Conway, Steve Vincent and Merci Montello
It’s bed time and a man is doing some late night reading, science fiction magazines. His horny wife gets a little upset over the attention the man is giving the magazines over his wife. The wife takes matters into he own hands and seduces the man.
After this roll in the hay, the man falls asleep and dreams of spaceships, aliens, distant planets, and lots of lurid sex. The thin plot line is really just there to frame the sex scenes that make up most of this film.
Aside from the numerous soft shots the viewer is treated to great cornball dialog, cheap sets, and a real eye candy as the colors are vibrant and pop right off the screen.
This early sexploitation from trash master David F. Friedman has actually a little more depth than some of his other films. Some might be tempted to compare this to Flesh Gordon, but everything is played out totally serious like the actors are not in on the joke.
Worth the price of admission alone for the laughable special effects towards the end, and the numerous softcore shots throughout the film.
Wam! Bam! Thank You Spaceman! (1975)
Director: William A. Levey
Stars: Jay Rasumny, Samual Mann and John Ireland
Because their alien world will be destroyed in 500 years, two ridiculous extraterrestrials visit earth with plans to re-populate their world with earth women.
Shortly after their landing the make their way down Hollywood blvd and really like what they see. They concoct a plan to abduct the woman and have their way with them. They proceed to abduct some woman and in a very cheap special effects spectacle transport them to their flying saucer.
After their abduction the woman are returned to earth, with the side effect of being nymphomaniacs. This leads to more softcore goodness and then nine months later the un-lucky ladies have baby Martians!
This sleazy grindhouse gem produced by Harry Novak has a lot going for it. It was directed by the same artist who brought us Blackenstein and Slumber Party '57. Those trash fiends with a sharp eye will be able to pick out grindhouse goddess Dian Thorn (Ilsa) as a horny hooker as well as Ed Wood actress Valda Hansen.
A must see if you can find it, it’s floating around on an out of print Something Weird Video DVD, as well as a bootleg that has a few XXX inserts added in as well. Either way it’s a great time to be had.
Other titles worth looking up:
Flesh Gordon (1974): Almost to much comedy, although it has an equal amount of sex.
Life Force (1985): A much more serious film then those listed here, but included because it is a great softcore sci-fi.
Inseminoid (1981): Another serious entry in the sexy sci-fi catalog, this one produced by the Shaw Bros.!
