Review: Zombie Apocalypse (2012)

Zombie Apocalypse
Directed by: Nick Lyon
Stars: Ving Rhames, Taryn Manning and Johnny Pacar

About a month before this premiered on SyFy a few stills from the movie were released, surprisingly they didn’t look that bad. I say surprisingly because the production company behind this movie is Asylum Pictures. It’s no secret that Asylum is the biggest Hollywood knock maker there is.

Often times they release films straight to DVD with titles and covers that so closely resemble the films they’re aping that renters and buyers are often tricked into purchasing the much inferior copycat films. Still they do this so often and with such great success they are starting to gain their own following from B-Movie coinsures.

With the bar set so low by previous productions I sat down to watch this without a lot of high expectations, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Asylum should be commended for not coming closer to making something worth watching, but for actually pulling one off and making a picture that’s not putrid.

We have all seen this before; it’s a Romero style zombie survival film. A group of survivors lead by the very capable Henry (Rhames), make their way across the wasteland to a rumored safe haven. Along the way the group is thinned out by flesh eating shamblers, but latter replenished by other survivors met along the way.

Part of what makes a typical Asylum picture so bad is the craptastic CG, and although this movie is good it’s not immune to that. Some of the fight chorography is laughable as well; when the survivors fight the zombies and sharp objects are swung they clearly miss their intended targets by at times feet.

Even with its short comings Zombie Apocalypse is a decent movie. When compared to the vast amount of bad Zombie movies that have been turned out over the last couple of years it looks even better. Not ground breaking or even all that original, but a fun waste of time.

Buy it here.

Not too bad, expectantly for Asylum
