Review: BKO: Bangkok Knockout [2010]

BKO: Bangkok Knockout [2010]
Director: Panna Rittikrai
Stars: Gitabak Agohjit, Speedy Arnold and Supakson Chaimongkol

An martial arts group competing for a chance to be in a Hollywood movie, are drugged and find themselves in a life and death battle against multiple opponents that is being streamed to a host of worldwide gamblers.

If you had told me 10 years ago that some of the best martial arts films in the world would be coming out of South East Asia I would have thought you were crazy. Without a doubt it started with the release of Ong Bak, since then movie productions in Thailand have cranked out film after film of a crazy hyper active martial arts movies.

BKO is definitely in the same vein as Ong Bak, a rather story light picture filled with amazing fight choreography and insane stunts. The premise is a familiar one, but one I like. It’s just another variation of “The Most Dangerous Game” set in modern times with digital cameras streaming all the action to a group of wealthy gamblers.

You won’t find deep meaningful dialog here, or even a story line that is very complex. But rather a flimsy plot that is there to do nothing more than to frame scene after scene of eye popping fight choreography and stunts that prove life is cheap in Thailand. Which is perfectly fine in my book, I watch movies like this to see action for action’s sake.  There are a few misguided flash backs that are clumsily sprinkled throughout the film to give it a little more meat in the story department, but don’t really help.

Recommend for the martial arts lover who doesn’t mind more action than story.
