WOPS: The Movie

WOPS: The Movie
Directors: Josey Wells, Tek Doko
Staring: Tek Doko, Joshua Winch and James George

Racial slurs, homosexual euphemisms, and gratuitous violence, sound like a fun time? Believe it or not it is. Freshman director Tek Doko does a commendable job of stirring up controversy in this hilarious social satire.

WOPS follows around a group of low level mob thugs through a series of small inter-connecting vignettes, filmed entirely like the reality show COPS. A cleaver idea that’s been tried before, but not as well executed as this.

Like the famous TV show they’re lampooning the title characters speak to the camera as it follows their exploits through the city. No minority, sexual orientation, or religion is safe from satire. The comedy although silly at times works without being exploitive.

This result is directly linked to co-director, and star Tek Doko, made possible through clever writing and set pieces. Any part of this film taken out of context would be sure to stir a hell fire or controversy, but watched with an open mind, and without the guilt at laughing at some of the more insensitive parts, it's obvious WOPS is a fun ride destined for cult fandom.  Rating | ****
